Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
